Meet Yen Nguyen of New Age Nail Studio in Gold Coast

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yen Nguyen.

Yen, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
After college, I pursued my dream of owning my own business. I purchased my first nail salon in the fall of 2009 in the Westloop. After 3 years of perseverance, I was ready to take my next step in building a brand new salon from the ground up. It didn’t take long for me to have luckily stumbled across this current location that was up for lease.

After 5 months of rigorous work, New Age Nail Studio was born.

My vision for this salon lies in its name. Growing up in the industry for as long as can remember, I’ve learned many things that lacked and was crucial to the business.

Which is how I built my business.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
New Age Nail Salon just turned 4 years old in February. It was absolutely not a smooth road! Obtaining building permits in the city of Chicago took so much longer than expected. We wanted to open right before the holidays in 2012, but was pushed back 3 months because of permits.

In addition, I was pregnant with my second son throughout the whole construction project. I remember still talking with my contractor over the phone while I was in labor! My husband and I also spent many late nights there to complete the project. Since then we were very fortunate to have hit it off unbelievably successful. But a business is always a work in progress, there’s always room to improve.

We’d love to hear a little more about your business.
Unlike other nail salons, we do really specialize in just nails. We are not a nail spa, we are a nail studio. We are best known for our no chip/gel manicure. We carry over 700 colors!

We also have a handful of very talented nail artists on our team that can whip up pretty awesome tiny pieces of art on your nails! I’m most proud of my amazing team. With 30 women working together we’ve only advanced every year.

What sets us apart from others is our minimalistic approach in ambiance, our above and beyond sanitation standards and consistent quality of service from every manicurist.

What were you like growing up?
I was an artistic nerd! I love to draw and organize.

I still carry the love of creativity and organization to this day throughout my business.
