Meet William Hook of Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences in Far Southwest side

Today we’d like to introduce you to William Hook.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up just north of where the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences is today. I remember watching its construction in 1985 and thinking “why would anyone want to build an agriculture school?” It was the same year as the initial Farm-Aid concert and even I was aware of the farm crisis. I’m so glad no one listened to my high school wisdom back then! I was a student at Bogan High School. After graduation, I attended Northwestern University and got my start with a bachelor’s degree in education. I was fortunate to work briefly at Bogan before taking a position in special education at Morrill Elementary School. After several years at Morrill, I transitioned to the assistant principal position. I was fortunate to “grow up” at Morrill. I learned so many useful skills and techniques that are with me to this day. I left Morrill in January 2008 to become the principal at Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences. I really feel like life has taken me full circle since watching its construction as a high school kid back in the eighties. I’ve received a full education in agriculture by working here. I know that the lessons we are teaching students to prepare them for not only post-secondary study but also how to be a great overall citizen.

Has it been a smooth road?
I initially struggled with the transition from elementary school to high school, but I had great mentors to help me along the way.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences story. Tell us more about the business.
Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences is renowned for providing students with both academic and career readiness through agricultural education. We don’t differentiate here between tracks that students are taking. All students are enrolled in college-preparatory courses and all students are enrolled in agricultural courses. I think this sets us apart from many high schools. Our students get active experiences in exploring colleges and careers throughout their high school years. I’m most proud of the work ethic I see in students. For example, we have a greenhouse on campus and we have a barn full of animals. The plants and animals need to be taken care of, regardless of whether or not the school is in session. Students come in on weekends, breaks, and even holidays to make sure everything keeps running smoothly.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
A big focus in the educational world is STEM education (science, technology, engineering and math). I’m proud to say that, we’ve always sought out STEM experiences for our students. As this trend continues, we will continue to be at the forefront of providing active and meaningful STEM education.
