Meet Viviana Langhoff of Adornment + Theory in Logan Square

Today we’d like to introduce you to Viviana Langhoff.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Viviana. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I ignited my first torch back in 2005 at SAIC, and have had a love affair with art jewelry, metals, and design ever since. After graduating, I managed a number of contemporary jewelry stores, while continuing my own custom design practice on the side. Entrepreneurship and art are in my blood, and I always envisioned opening a space where I can design as well as represent other artists and designers.

This past October I was overjoyed to open the doors to Adornment + Theory, a gallery and design studio that represents extraordinary, boundary-pushing work shaped by emerging artists and designers who are crafting the future of jewelry and accessories.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I knew going into it, that opening a business was no easy road, but the journey has been rich and through the struggles, I am learning to be present and enjoy the process. Over the past six months, my vision, character and beliefs have all been tested and strengthened.

My advice to those considering a huge undertaking such as starting your own business is that no one will believe in your business or creation more than you. So, if you have doubts or if you are not fully committed to it, your vision will fade fast. If you’re waiting for someone to hand you an opportunity, you’ll be waiting the rest of your life.

I’ve learned so much and I welcome challenges because they are refining me and my work. As the saying goes “A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor”. Despite the hardship, I’ve grown immensely and I’m having a blast. It feels like forever ago when we opened our doors last October, but I’m just getting started.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Painting casitas (small ceramic houses) and eating cheese empanadas with my grandmother in Puerto Rico. 🙂
