So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
One of my earliest memories is from the age of four, running full speed alongside our family dog, Rex, and my mom saying, “You were running like the wind!” That spirit of freedom and exuberance encapsulates my relationship with animals throughout my life.
It was through my volunteer work in dog rescue that I first became familiar with conditions common in dog boarding and daycare, and I knew that dogs and discerning owners wanted and deserved better. I decided to take my understanding of all things dog and create The Village Dog, the ultimate alternative for daycare and boarding where dogs would be treated as they would wish in a luxurious cage-free and kennel-free setting. I purchased a property in the midst of the North Shore and transformed it into a boutique dog hotel complete with outdoor play yards in order to provide a uniquely indulgent experience for a happy group of dog-friendly dogs.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I purchased the property for my business in the midst of the 2008 financial crash when financing on commercial properties was difficult to come by. I had already established a working relationship with a regional bank and because of that was able to move forward. It was a unique and challenging point in time to be starting a new business from the ground up but creative problem solving and being prepared to go beyond at all times was what got me to the other side of any challenges. It was a case of holding tight to your belief in your goal and yourself, keeping fired up to work, work, work, and not letting outside forces put a stop to your progress.
Please tell us about The Village Dog.
We’re known for providing truly customized care to each of our canine guests: understanding, meeting, and exceeding their wants and needs during their visit with us.
We’re also known for our outdoorsy spirit – we have a big yard and we like to use it! Neither rain nor snow will stop the fun, and in fact, often adds to it. We provide the rather unique feature of direct access at will to our outdoor yards via customized dog doors so that each of our guests can enjoy their day at their own pace and in their own way.
What sets The Village Dog apart is our unyielding commitment to create an exceptional experience and wonderful memories for each of our guests. I’m most proud of the unsurpassed quality of care that we provide day in and day out, and of delivering integrity in what we do.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I can’t say that I’d have done anything differently. Regardless of how prepared you may be, there will be surprises that pop up along the way. But each challenge that you work through makes you more efficient and effective at addressing the next challenge.
