Today we’d like to introduce you to Viktor Gerasimovski.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Well, there is an interesting story behind that. Two years ago I was playing basketball and somewhere in the middle of the game I felt pain in my knee and left the gym. Next day I went to see a doctor and after MRI was done I was diagnosed with knee ACL tear. I was very upset because I was aware that I will be incapacitated for a longer period of time due to the surgery that had to be done and then the recovery time of 18-24 months after and won’t be able to be physically active as I wanted to.
I adore sports, especially basketball, volleyball and biking and the fact that they are one of the main sources for building social capital in Chicago, I knew that I need to develop or try to rekindle an interest that would ideally turn into something more substantial and long-term. I loved photography ever since I was a kid and played around with my father’s old Konica Minolta, but have never dared to pursue something more profound or meaningful up until I landed on my Fuji last year.
I was so thrilled to learn about the camera settings, the holy trinity of aperture, shutter speed and ISO and post work. I went through plenty of how-to YouTube videos, joined photo-community groups and attended photo learning meetups and photo walks. I met many awesome photographers and listened to what they have to say. The entire process of getting a photograph done from the moment you capture the frame to the moment you post online is slowly getting shorter as you learn more. And there is a lot more to learn and share.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I set up a very simple goal for myself. I just want to improve. As long as I am on the learning curve path I believe I am where I want to be. And I can see myself very clearly through the process. I’d take photos with exquisite composition but then would notice they are overexposed or a great photograph of a model but with a lower shutter speed that would blur the subject.
I am happy when I see that because then I am aware of the mistakes I need to work on and the improvements I need to do. I realized that having great interaction with your camera is of immense importance if you want to bring great photography and be confident with it.
Photographer Victor – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’ve been constantly going back and forth between portrait and street photography. Lately, I committed myself to doing more street and landscape photography. I love catching love taking landscape photos and then manipulating with colors through exaggeration of teal and orange tones. I think these tones spark warmer sentiments to the viewer and give the impression that the photos that are taken are probably coming from another universe/unknown place.
Where do you see your industry going over the next 5-10 years? Any big shifts, changes, trends, etc?
I am a novice in the field of photography and I am still learning. As long as I will be saying this in 5 or 10 years from now I think I will be succeeding. I tend to relate to success less to achievable context and more to personal self-growth.
My success bar is always making sure I get something new after each photo shoot. I believe that making mistakes is healthy to certain extent and that it helps me with gaining experience. Failing should not be perceived as a bad thing. If you don’t fail you don’t learn and If you don’t learn, you won’t change.
