Today we’d like to introduce you to Vida Pranckus.
Vida was a nurse in Kaunas Lithuania, she got additional education and training in massage to the highest level. She worked in a sports medicine clinic as a massage therapist for 8 years, she got married to an American and came to the USA to raise a family, and she wanted to be a stay at home Mom until school started for her son. She wanted to have a career, she started cleaning houses, but this was not for her, she also worked retail for a major company, but this also was not for her. So she decided to go back to school, without great command of English, she had a friend who was an Esthetician who enjoyed her work. So she decided to take the plunge into school encouraged by her husband, but she’s worried about her English, so she got enrolled in a beauty school. She almost quit a couple of times to finish her studies on time.
Then she was devastated when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The doctor wanted to operate quickly so they did. She was worried for her life. She made it thru her radiation treatments and was worried she would not pass her state test to be an esthetician because of the lapse of time and radiation on her body, but she did. She is now a licensed Esthetician. Now she needed to find a job she got a couple of phone interviews but nobody wanted her because of her accent, poor English and no experience. About 6 months later, she got hired part time at a local salon spa then after a month, the other esthetician quit and she was the only esthetician the salon spa had. They did not have that much business, the owners then hired another esthetician and they gave Vida’s customers to the new esthetician even the ones that requested her, the owners encouraged her to get a massage license, the owners also made fun of her in front of the customers because of her accent, so Vida started the process of gaining a massage license with help from her husband. She thought she had to go back to school but did not, so after about one year paper of paper work from California to Lithuania to New York City to the state of Indiana and about $1500, she got her massage license.
Now, she had worked at the salon spa for over three years, doing massage and facials and the owners were forced to give back to Vida her customers because they were not happy with the other estheticians and massage therapist. Now she knew she was ready to start her own business. This was her American Dream. After looking for 6 months she finally found a place she could rent, but there was 6 months of construction (week-ends only plus snow). She finally opened in July 2016. Her business was very slow in the beginning but word of mouth happy customers some advertising is getting business afloat and growing.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
All new businesses have bumps along the road, the most important thing is to quickly find your mistakes and adjust. Make sure all your customers are happy and keep trying new things. Financing is always a big bump.
