Meet Tyler Clark of Inspire by Tyler in Near Hyde Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Clark.

Tyler, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I always loved art, but as I progressed through my STEM education, there seemed to be little room to paint. I went to Spelman College and Georgia Institute of Technology and studied Math and Mechanical Engineering. Once I got to Georgia Tech, I realized painting was therapeutic for me, it really helped me get through the rigorous engineering program. When anyone saw my art they wanted it, this encouraged me to pour more into it when I graduated. I moved back to Chicago for work and created the Inspire by Tyler business. Many of my pieces involve multidimensional elements such as hair, fabric, and jewelry. My goal is to inspire people to reach their goals and encourage self-love.

In September 2017, one of my paintings “From #HurtBae to #HealedBae” went viral, receiving millions of views. It was even posted on The Shade Room. This elevated my platform as an artist.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It is challenging trying to push myself as an artist. I am a visual performing artist, often painting alongside Gifted Keys as she sings. The first time, I painted in front of an audience was terrifying and liberating all at once. Being pushed into unfamiliar spaces is not easy but it teaches you new things and opens up different opportunities. Also, when my painting went viral, there were so many people trying to view my website that it crashed. There are both challenges with the art side and the business side of things. Another challenge has been learning how to ship my art and make sure it is properly secured. I will say, you learn as you go. I am open to these challenges as they come because they are molding me.

Inspire by Tyler – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Inspire by Tyler is known mostly for paintings of black women with real hair. People truly connect to these multi-dimensional paintings. I create custom paintings and am a visual performing artist. One thing I am most proud of is giving back. I have an Inspire by Tyler scholarship which encourages youth to think about their purpose and passion in life. I mentioned how I lost sight of my true purpose as I was going through my engineering program. I want students to take a step back and really think about where their heart is and choose an academic career path accordingly.

Also, I auctioned off a painting, selected by Ms. Tina Knowles, at the Wearable Arts Gala In LA. This helped fund Tina’s Angels and Richard’s Warriors youth programs.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is pushing past your comfort zone. It means falling and getting back up prepared to make it. Success to me is also giving glory to God. I know I wouldn’t be where I am right now if it wasn’t for God’s grace. As my business grows, I also have to give back and continue to encourage others to go for their dreams and not give up.
