Meet Trailblazer Shameka Wherry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shameka Wherry.

Shameka, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been doing my own make up since 2013/14. In the year of 2015, I started to take it more seriously and over time my skills improved. As my skills improved others would ask me to do their make up. I declined for years. It wasn’t until January 2018 that I decided to step out of my comfort zone and give it a try. My skills had improved a great deal and more and more people were telling me that I should be a MUA. Fast forward eight months into 2018 and I am a freelance make up artist with a small but growing clientele. On May 1st of 2018, I decided to launch my own eyelash line. For me, lashes are an essential part of make up. The right lashes can take any look to the next level. So, I took a leap of faith and start my own lash company. I’m new to all of this, but the best part is knowing that I’m growing and learning more each day. It also feels amazing knowing that my clients and customers are satisfied with my products and service.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The main challenges I have faced thus far are being consistent, growing my clientele, and trying to find new ways to stand out. It’s no secret that the beauty industry is booming right now. Everyone is doing hair, nails, and makeup. If you are just now entering the game like myself, consistency is key. People need to know that you exist for them to support you. I know that it’s easier said than done but that’s what separates the successful from the unsuccessful. You have to give it your all, work at it like a full-time job, even when you aren’t seeing immediate benefits from it. Hard work beats talent. This is something that I too struggle with.

We’d love to hear more about Beat by Meek (Meek’s Minks).
I specialize in helping make women feel beautiful. My work as an artist is broad. I can do anything from the most modest/simple looks to the very dramatic/creative. In this movement, I would say my natural goals are what I specialize in. My clients love the natural glam and although the process is essentially the same, the outcome for each client is different. As a brand, I am most proud of being able to say that I have very prompt and good service. I respond to all messages in a very timely manner as well as shipping packages. My customer can expect to get their lashes within 3 days of ordering, that’s at the most. I take pride in interacting with my customers and treating them as if they are special and important because they are. If it weren’t for my clients, customers, and supporters I wouldn’t be able to do what I love.

Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
My favorite book of all time is “A Day Late & A Dollar Short” by Terry McMillian. She’s an amazing author but that book in particular really resonates with me and my upbringing. A few other books that I enjoy are “Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell and “How to Change the Way You Think” by Amy Sharp. I love reading self-help books. Books that help me to better myself.

  • Natural Glam $45 (Meek’s Minks included)
