Today we’d like to introduce you to Nellisa Heath.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Nellisa. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I use to think I needed to live in Los Angeles, CA in order to have the media career I always dreamed of. That was until God reminded me that the gifts and talents were inside me and that I had the power to create opportunities regardless of my location. This is where the journey began with the concept of “The Look Chicago” which is a media platform that would showcase all the things that I loved.
I began creating content that focused on philanthropy, fashion, beauty, and design. I started by contacting several media outlets in Chicago, with hopes to begin showcasing my projects to the world.
My television debut happened when ABC’s Windy City Live featured my non-for-profit organization Maryanna’s Heart. The segment focused on my imitative “Prom Queen” which honors underprivileged high schoolers with dresses and glam preparation for prom night. I was also able to land several radio interviews to promote this project throughout Chicago.
My next project “Fancy Like Mommy” was inspired after the birth of my twin daughters Columbia Skye and Meadow Reign. Fancy Like Mommy is a personal styling company exclusively for children. The company launched its first shoe line designed to mimic mommy’s designer shoes and has taken the world by storm. Our shoes can now be purchased from several online retailers including Amazon, Walmart, and Sears. I was able to re-appear on WindyCity Live to feature the shoe line and debut my personal styling expertise.
from there, I began searching for local, regional and national sponsors to partner with me on future projects. My personal styling talents caught the attention of JC Penny which leads to an ongoing relationship that birthed several styling segments on WCIU, The Jam TV Show.
My media talents also afforded me the opportunity to report on the red carpet for the 2018 Nickelodeon’s Kids Choice Awards in Los Angeles, CA and the Slime Fest in Chicago, IL. I have also reported for several events throughout Chicago including Chicago Fashion Week and Agora sneaker ball.
I am now a contributor with WCIU, TheJam TV Show, where I host a weekly segment called Jam Deals, sponsored by Morningsave.com. I also continue to do sponsored fashion segments to now include working with the National retailer Macys.
The Look Chicago is a platform that houses all of my projects including the soon to be a debut of “Look Media” which will offer representation and resources to individuals who too want to showcase their businesses and projects via television and or print. I feel so grateful that I can now be a part of helping others build their brands.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My journey has definitely not been easy sailing especially with balancing my career and being a full-time mother to my twin girls. My number one priority is nurturing and caring for them and at 19 months old, you can imagine how much time and attention it takes. Sometimes, it’s difficult finding enough time in the day to balance it all. Additionally, deciding to transition my career from corporate to entrepreneur came with its own set of challenges. Being that I was new on the Chicago Media scene, it was not easy for me to get in my foot the door. I had to be persistence and work even harder to get noticed. At the end of the day, what keeps me going is reminding myself that what God has for me is mine as long as I’m willing to do the work. I would advise young girls to work hard, stay true to themselves, pray and believe that they can accomplish anything they put their mind to.

Do you recommend any apps, books or podcasts that have been helpful to you?
I am a strong woman of faith so I would have to say my favorite book is the Bible. I strongly believe that it is the blue print of the way God wants us to live our life here on earth. One of my favorite scriptures is Mark 11:24 which highlights whatever you ask in prayer Believe and it shall come to past”. This scripture has manifested itself to be true so many times in my life. Two of my favorite inspirational speakers are Joel Osteem and Sarah Jakes. When I find myself low, I can always count on them to give me a good word from God.
