Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Carty.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Megan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Who doesn’t love candles? I was spending entirely too much money on candles that didn’t necessarily cater to my candle needs. For me, smell is the strongest of senses linked to memory. I love being mentally transported back to a specific time, so my partner and I decided to create a growing line of soy candles that all remind us of a memory, person, or place – keeping the memories alive. We did some researching, started experimenting with some of our favorite scents, designed the overall brand aesthetic and the rest is history! Right now, we are stirring up some yummy new scents for our Spring/Summer 2018 Collection.
Has it been a smooth road?
Since Wolf Bone started as a passion project and glorified hobby, it’s been a challenge to balance my full-time day job at a design agency with the candle company. Because I’m designing all day at work, sometimes it’s hard to continue the creativity into the evenings. When I start to feel like I’m burning out (get it), I give myself the necessary me-time. Nothing is going to get accomplished with the candles or my full-time job if I don’t take a night or few off. If you are doing something because you love it, keep reminding yourself of that.
We’d love to hear more about Wolf Bone Candles.
I’m a designer and art director by day and by night, I’m a business co-owner. I’m the creative side of the company, while my partner deals with logistics and operations. I like to think that we’re the perfect duo to keep the brand alive. Because all of our candles are hand-poured in small batches, we have full control over all of our products. We like to make sure every scent is complex and reminiscent of something important to us, that hopefully everyone will enjoy. We created a Nasty Woman candle embodying the strength and sass that every female should carry and half of the proceeds are donated to Planned Parenthood.
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
Network with everyone! You never know who may be able to help with your concept, so don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation or ask others for help. If you’re inspired by someone, let them know and see if you can pick their brain! Social media is a great way to spread the word and network with others without spending a dime. We only use our Instagram and Facebook accounts to advertise the candles and of course, word of mouth.
