Today we’d like to introduce you to Maya-Camille Broussard.
Justice of the Pies is a bakery that specializes in sweet and savory pies, quiches and tarts. The company was founded in memory of Maya-Camille’s late father, Steve Broussard. The elder dubbed himself the “Pie Master” and was a criminal defense attorney with a hobby for baking (and eating) pies. Justice of the Pies was created to celebrate his love of pies and to honor his belief that people deserve second chances.
As such, Justice of the Pies is formed as an L3C and its goal is to positively impact the lives of those who work with them. They consider themselves to be a social mission in a culinary art form. Justice of the Pies collaborates with DreamOn Education (a Chicago-based nonprofit organization) to produce its signature program, the I KNEAD LOVE WORKSHOP. The workshop provides culinary and nutrition instruction for young students enrolled in the 6th-8th grades and who are residing in low-income, at-risk communities in Chicago. Through the workshop, the kids learn about proper food preparation, kitchen safety, choosing healthier food options, and exercising creativity in the kitchen.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has been relatively smooth. This is my second entrepreneurial venture and based on my past experiences, I’ve been able to approach this venture with a steadiness that I didn’t have before. I urge young women to find a collective of other young women who are in the same field. There is a benefit to having peer support.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Justice of the Pies – what should we know?
I am proud to have a brand that has a social impact. Our I KNEAD LOVE Workshop has made a meaningful impact in the lives of many youths residing in low-income, at-risk neighborhoods by providing a culturally-enriching experience in the kitchen. As a creative entrepreneur, I am known for being just that: creative. I love challenges because it forces me to think on a broader scale.
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
Growing as a person living with a disability, I’ve become accustomed to working harder and longer than everyone around me. My work ethic and incessant drive are what I credit for my success.
