Today we’d like to introduce you to Jen & Dave Brown.
Jen and Dave, please share your story with us.
My husband and I opened the Rock Island Public House almost 6 years ago. Both of us were craft beer/craft cocktail enthusiasts and were honestly tired of having to drive to the city any time that we wanted to go out. Not having many options close to us, it prompted us to open our own spot including all of the things we love about other bars! We have 16 rotating lines of craft beer, a full bar, craft cocktails, pinball, a patio. We strive on focusing our events on supporting craft breweries, our community, local non-profit organizations, and animal rescue organizations.
Has it been a smooth road?
I have learned a lot since we opened our doors 6 years ago. Creating an atmosphere and environment that is comfortable and welcoming to our customers was a huge priority. To create this environment required an enormous time commitment from my husband and me, and selecting/training our employees to relay our standards proved trying. My advice is to never stray from your intuition; your efforts will eventually pay off, and walking into a welcoming business environment where the customers repeatedly come back and are happy is one of the best rewards one could ask for!

I own a craft beer bar called the Rock Island Public House located in Blue Island. We have 16 rotating lines of craft beer, a full bar, and draft cocktails. In the last year, we have started hosting rotating chefs into our kitchen and have done monthly brunches and dinners. We host events throughout the year focusing on supporting craft breweries, but also host monthly DJ nights, and fundraisers for local organizations and schools. Our business has also become the event space for multiple weddings, bridal showers, birthday parties, and even baby showers. We also host off-premise events like local community clean ups and historical society fundraisers.
Which women have inspired you in your life? Why?
I truly feel lucky to have been surrounded by strong women my entire life, whether it be my family, friends, or co-workers. As a young teenager, I was heavily influenced by the many bands in the Riot Grrrl movement, so positive, strong women, were literally in my ear every day. I have continued to achieve my goals every day and surround myself by supportive women (and men)!

All Dave and Jen are concerned about is whether or not YOU are enjoying yourself at their place!! They are truly in the service industry for the right reasons…customer service! You won’t find much more genuine people.
