Today we’d like to introduce you to Janelle Brown.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the practice, why don’t you give our readers a few quick bullet points about you and your story.
• Graduated from Cosmetology school 2002
• Obtained instructors license from Paul Mitchell the School.
• Education Leader & instructor at Paul Mitchell the School Normal from 2008-2016.
• 2017 Opened Eastside Hair Studio in Bloomington IL
• Currently working behind the chair & owner of Eastside Hair Studio.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I have been so blessed to be surrounded by people who support what I love to do! I think my biggest struggle was that I learned how to DO hair but I didn’t learn how to be profitable in doing hair. Becoming an educator ultimately made me a better stylist by simply pushing me out of my comfort zone.
My advice…step outside of your comfort zone. I truly believe that in this industry education is key to staying fresh, and staying relevant. Things I love to do: find classes to attend with friends, staying connected to the community by getting involved with other young woman who have their own businesses & volunteer for local events.
We’d love to hear more about Eastside Hair Studio.
I love giving woman confidence! In my eyes a woman with confidence is unstoppable!
Through the consultation I can usually help them figure out what they need/want. I think that’s why I love doing weddings, and also extensions! You’d be surprised how many woman just want MORE HAIR!
I think what I’m most proud of is the clientele that I’ve attracted after returning behind the chair. I really do love my clients!
I try not to have too much focus on what other stylists are doing, my focus is on what each one of my client’s needs to look and feel beautiful! Sometimes that requires a long thorough consultation and a few Pinterest pictures!
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
I think each woman is different! I know for me the hardest part since becoming a business owner is just finding that balance between being a mom, wife, friend, business owner, & stylist.
The great part about our industry is the possibilities are endless! Opportunity is around every corner! I’ve felt that during the past 15 years in the industry I was able to customize my career and goals to fit every season of life so far!
