Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Latasha Taylor.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My family has always been a family of cooker, bakers, and visionaries. As a young girl, I said that I would one day own my own family restaurant and keep the recipes and legacy of good cooking going.. at age 18, I came up with the name “Flammin” and it stuck with me until my dream came true. Today Flammin is located in the Chatham Area of Chicago; and is known as the home of comfort food, with a southern flare, and coined for our delicious salmon croquettes, mustard catfish, French toast, and Kool-aid (Flammin-aid). Flammin stands by great food, equitable customer service to families, serving the community and changing the face of Chicago with food from the heart.
Has it been a smooth road?
There’s definitely been more good than bad. It was first a struggle with the community and challenges with violence and loitering in the area, but my family and close friends have been doing a great job with social media and personal outreach in the community and welcoming people within the community with special attention, love, and empowerment. Flammin has hired adults and teenagers within the community and goes over and beyond to make the community feel apart of Flammin.
We’d love to hear more about Flammin.
I am an assistant principal for Chicago Public School and I hire culinary students from CPS to work for Flammin. I also cook part-time at Flammin and personally work with all the employees at every level to empower teamwork, continuity, networking and building stronger bonds within our community through building around more resources, great food, lofty conversations that create a peaceful environment and great place to eat.
What’s the most important piece of advice you could give to a young woman just starting her career?
Always dream big, set goals and never stop believing that you have the power to make them come true.
