Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsey Carter.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My start is actually quite interesting! I thought I would become the next sought after painter and while in one of my college prep-highschool art classes, my instructor pulled me to the side and told me I had a specific style and should consider design school instead. I thought, there was no harm in looking into it. I had been hand sewing things but had not viewed it as a career path. She insisted, so she and I filled out my college application to The Art institute here in Chicago. I was accepted and the rest is excitingly, history! I have been willfully and eagerly building the brand ever since!
Has it been a smooth road? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way? Any advice for other women, particularly young women who are just starting their journey?
Smooth? Ha! That made me laugh, out loud! Being a woman in any professional setting has always been rocky. Being a black female entrepreneur demands you work twice as hard for anything wanted for yourself and your business! I would enlighten the aspiring designer or creative professional to take chances, say yes! At 29 years old, I can honestly say that I have had an amazing career so far, I have welcomed new ideas and embrace change, head on! Do not be afraid of evolution!
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Alex Carter – what should we know? What are you most proud of as a brand, organization or service provider?
Alex Carter is a self titled unisex brand that caters to the wardrobe needs of the individual not afraid to take risks and make statements! Our customer’s style embodies our mission perfectly, simplistic edge. Grateful for the opportunity to fulfill our mission! We have defined it, tailored it to fit the brand and have stayed true to this philosophy. I am most proud of being published in Italian Vogue! Every since I can remember, Vogue has been the bible of fashion and to see my design featured, moved me in ways there is not enough time to express! I am grateful and proud of everything I have been granted, blessed beyond measure!
Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
I spoke on a panel once and this question was asked of me. My answer was simple, “Look forward and reach back!”. More often than not, people forget the importance of community and the power of knowledge. Who you know and what you know are two very important components of success. You have ideas? Great! Who is on the path to success and putting some of those ideas to action in a smooth fashion? Reach out to them, ask them questions! Get aquatinted with their stories, take their advice! It will do nothing but help you! Mentors are the water to the plants of your life’s path, very vital!
