Today we’d like to introduce you to Casey Finn and Bridget Matkovich.
Casey and Bridget, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We’ve been friends for over 15 years and really grew close during high school. During those days, we spent time scrapbooking and making t-shirts for pep rallies (big nerds all the way!) and just loved being creative together.
As college, first jobs, and new adventures came and went, we found a passion for DIY projects and put our creative skills to use decorating our first homes. Wanting to showcase some of our projects to family and friends, we decided to put them on the internet. Because why not?! So in 2013, The DIY Playbook was officially born.
We didn’t think anyone would ever read our blog (maybe our moms if we were lucky), but we were pleasantly surprised to quickly gain a following and we’ve been growing ever since. Over the past 5 years, our site has had millions of pageviews and we have readers all over the world coming to our site everyday.
On The DIY Playbook, we showcase all of the projects that we’re each tackling around our own homes. From adding backsplash to a kitchen, to decorating a nursery, we aim to inspire others to create homes that they love (often on a budget)!
Has it been a smooth road?
It certainly isn’t always sunshine and rainbows and perfectly curated Instagram feeds. The biggest thing we’ve struggled with over the past 5 years is balance. For most of the time, we’ve been blogging we’ve both worked full-time jobs outside of The DIY Playbook (Casey left her corporate job to blog full-time a few months ago). We’re not going to lie… working a full-time job, running a full-time blog, and being good wives, sisters, daughters and friends is no easy feat.
But at the end of the day, all of the hard work has always been worth it to us. We don’t mind the crazy hours or long nights because we absolutely love everything about The DIY Playbook! You’ve definitely gotta be willing to put in the time and hard work to see results.
We’d love to hear more about The DIY Playbook.
The DIY Playbook is a website designed to inspire others to create a home that they love. On our site, you’ll find step-by-step tutorials for projects that you can tackle yourself. We also highlight interior design trends and give you tips to style and decorate your home with ease. We truly believe that your home should tell your story, so we give you the inspiration, tools and confidence to transform your space into something that you love.
We’re not professional contractors and we’re not professional interior designers and we think that’s what’s so great about our site. We’re just like you! So, if you see us tackle a project on the blog, then you know that you can do it, too! We’re learning as we go and taking you along for the ride (even documenting our failures along the way).
We’re interested to hear your thoughts on female leadership – in particular, what do you feel are the biggest barriers or obstacles?
The DIY world has always been dominated by men and it can sometimes be a struggle for guys to see 2 blonde girls working with power tools. We can’t tell you the number of times we’ve gone to a home improvement store with our husbands and the sales person only addresses them because they assume they’re the ones doing the projects around the house (and our non-handy husbands usually just nod, smile, and point them in our direction. Ha!).
But, that just motivates us even more to inspire women to improve their homes all by themselves (no guy needed!). If we can prove to other girls out there that, they don’t need to hire a handyman or convince their husband to hang a shelf in their home, then, we’re doing something right!
