Meet Trailblazer Allyson Straka

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allyson Straka.

Allyson, Frozen Garden founder, became a certified Holistic Health Coach to help others lead a healthier lifestyle. The result? Her clients struggled, complaining they couldn’t find any convenient, healthy food and didn’t have time to make meals from scratch. She was discussing this problem with her dad one day and he said: “Allyson, if you could get your clients to do just ONE thing to improve their health, what would it be?” Without even a second’s hesitation, she said: “Drink green smoothies every day!” Her dad responded, “How can you make that easier and more convenient for them?” Frozen Garden was born! Allyson decided to change
the food system. She set out to create a product, without additives, that is easy and convenient for people. Her goal is to prove that it is possible to eat healthily. And that’s how, in 2015, Frozen Garden was created.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been many challenges and bumps in the road along the way. You’ll experience some of the highest of highs and lowest of lows when starting your own business. I would advise other women who are starting their journey to understand and accept that there will be many challenges and it won’t be easy. To not let those challenges bring them down and instead see them as an opportunity to improve and grow. Surround yourself with only the strongest of people who add value to the business. When determining who to hire and for what positions, look for areas where you personally are weak in and hire people who are strong in those areas to complement and add value to you and the business.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Frozen Garden – what should we know?
I am most proud of utilizing small local farmers in Northwest Indiana and Southwest Michigan for our ready-to-blend green smoothies. Not only does it support the local economy, but we are supporting a local food system. The quality of the products our farmers grow is next to none. I firmly believe that in order to continue the REAL food movement… we have to support small REAL food farmers.

Finding a mentor and building a network are often cited in studies as a major factor impacting one’s success. Do you have any advice or lessons to share regarding finding a mentor or networking in general?
I will admit that I am not great at networking… it doesn’t come naturally to me. But, I force myself to network and make connections even if I’m not the most comfortable with that. If there is anyone that you learn of that could have knowledge or information that could be helpful, invite them out for coffee. I had learned SO MUCH from sitting down and having a cup of coffee with other women business owners. Most are more than willing to share their experiences. If you can avoid some of the mistakes that others have made, then you are a step ahead of the game.
