Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracey Buchman, Julie Engelman, and Glenda Wulfsohn.
We’d love to hear your story, please kick it off for us.
Our passion for flowers and arranging started a long time ago. Tracey started by asking her mother, a competitive floral arranger, if she could use a 5th grader’s input and Tracey had lots of ideas. Julie’s mother was a botanist who had a 1 acre cut flower garden, and her childhood was spent gathering flowers and putting them in a Dixie cup, of course artfully arranged. Glenda’s mother was also an avid gardener and flower arranger, but Glenda began her interest when she took a flower arranging elective in college. Time moved forward and we all wound up living in the same village serving on various PTO committees together. After our children graduated we found ourselves without a committee so we decided to form our own committee and get into business. We are all graduates of The Chicago School of Flower Design.
Has it been a smooth road?
Anything to do with the flowers and creativity has been a walk in the park, but it is the technology that goes along with running a business that has proven to be a challenge along the way. Setting up accounting systems and spread sheets took some time to learn.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Twigs & Blooms story. Tell us more about the business.
We believe in very individualized attention. Since we don’t have a floral shop, we can make very personal decisions on behalf of the bride or client. We are not simply pulling from stock. We pride ourselves in making careful and thoughtful selections from local sources. In addition we’re growing some of our own flowers and have been known to put on hip waders to harvest lotus pods.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
We are seeing weddings and special events taking place in all kinds of varied and sometimes unexpected places. Also, technology has changed the way that clients shop. They are much more savvy about the trends and floral choices. As clients continue to seek new types of venues, we look forward to designing with new and unusual plant material. The more that evolves, the more exciting and fun the process becomes for us.
