Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Ryan.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Tim. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I first gained exposure to the world of real estate when I was staffed on a consulting project to help achieve some large tax credits for a large ground up development in Las Vegas. I was working at Ernst and Young at the time. As I progressed through my career, I had the opportunity to work in many other interesting real estate projects, but always on a consulting basis. I think all of these projects really helped me realize how exciting the commercial real estate business could be.
Then, a number of years ago, I decided to take a deeper plunge into this industry and enter the brokerage business. I knew people who did this work, and they really enjoyed the fast past dynamic nature of this business. It also awarded them a lot of freedom. I started working as a tenant side office broker, building a client base by canvassing all of the buildings in the CBD. During these early years, I noticed how many law firms there were that had spare offices to rent out. That’s when I first realized the potential for a service like Legal-lease.
Fast forward a few years, and I now own my own tenant rep firm, Monarch Realty. I operate Monarch alongside legal-lease. The two companies are very complimentary to each other. Legal-lease has helped me build a strong rapport among local law firms, which in turn has helped me gain tenant rep clientele.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road has been smooth for the most part, but I haven’t grown as quickly as I had hoped. Law firms are very challenging to sell to.
The largest struggle has been my lack of technology skills (no coding experience or familiarity with platforms).
However, I’ve learned enough over the past few years to intelligently engage professionals and direct their work to achieve my goals.
I recently decided to invest some significant money in sales and marketing to spur some additional growth. I have my fingers crossed that this will get me over the hump.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Legal-lease – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Legal-lease helps law firms and other professional service firms list their spare offices to solo professionals and small companies needing space.
All transactions are principal to principal, so there are no commissions.
Our competition is the traditional print publications that put out classified ads, so we are proud to serve as the new frontier in online advertising for the shared space vertical.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
My favorite thing about Chicago is the Lakefront and parkland. It’s a terrific natural playground. My least favorite thing about Chicago is its association with a troubled state like Illinois. So much more could be accomplished here if we either seceded from Illinois (which I don’t believe we can do) or formed our own state.
