Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Masters.
Tim, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started apprenticing with my mentor, Bob Brixie, back in 1990. Mr. Brixie started making mattresses in the community in the 60’s and taught me everything that I know. I’ve loved this job from day one, which led me to buying the business in 1995. I wanted to continue the tradition of quality that Mr. Brixie had established in the local market while keeping up to speed on the latest technologies in the mattress industry.
When my daughter, Emily, was born she had a number of health issues that inspired me to design a green crib mattress for her. This is what brought me in to the green mattress space over 10 years ago, as we started offering safe, non-toxic mattresses for the entire family. Today we offer a broad range of handcrafted mattresses in our local shop, all of which are still made by hand by our team of skilled craftsmen. Because we make our mattresses in-house to order we know exactly what is going in to them and can stand behind them 100%.
We sell our green mattresses, called My Green Mattress, nationally and have had the opportunity to reach in to peoples’ homes far beyond our local market. It’s a passion for us to provide safe, economical mattresses of the highest quality possible.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No road is perfectly smooth. There are many challenges to being a small business owner. Taking over the business, finding the capital to do so and building the team that we have today has been a long and winding road. Growing a business on a national stage has provided its own set of challenges as well. From keeping up with demand, handling shipping across the country, to customer service, every day presents its own set of unique challenges but thankfully we have an excellent, dedicated team on hand to tackle what is thrown at us. We tend to all wear many hats as a small, growing business but I think we handle it all very well.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Quality Sleep Shop & My Green Mattress – what should we know?
First and foremost what sets us apart from others in our industry is that we’re one of a very few number of mattress companies who are still handcrafting our own mattresses. Especially in the local market, there just aren’t very many of us doing this anymore. For us it’s important that we know exactly what goes in to each of our mattresses and that we pair our customers with a mattress that is going to give them good, restorative sleep for years to come. We offer a broad range of mattresses from inner-springs & pocketed coils to memory foam and all-natural latex. We do not use fire retardant chemicals in any of our beds, which makes them safer than most others on the market. Because we have our own factory, we also specialize in custom mattresses. From custom or antique beds, to RVs & campers and even tiny houses, we have the ability to handcraft exactly what our customer’s need for any application from the array of materials we have at hand.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Aside from offering a quality product, it really boils down to customer service. We have an excellent, friendly and knowledgeable staff to assist customers either on the phone or in our showroom in La Grange Highlands in finding the right mattress fit for them.
