Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Buividas.
Tim, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
From a young age, I always knew that I would own my own business. By my early twenties, I had started and failed at four different business ventures. While working to earn a living, I went back to school to obtain my master’s degree in organizational behavior. My first class was a group dynamics course and my facilitator was Dr. Cooperwrighter. The class changed my life and I knew that my career path and next business would be in the field of Leadership Development, Team Development, Change Management, and Culture Work. Along with my partner, Dr. Susan Cain, we opened the Corporate Learning Institute in 1995.
Along the way, we discovered outdoor adventure, high ropes courses and became certified facilitators. We built a corporate training facility in Lisle, IL in the early 1990s and ran the outdoor facility until 2011.
We continued to educate ourselves and gain experience in the learning and development world. We were certified in multiple physiological instruments that help people better communicate and work effectively together. We worked with the majority of large Chicago businesses and small family businesses throughout Chicago and the nation. By the mid-2000s, my partner and I returned to school to deepen our knowledge of our practice and were awarded Doctorates in Organizational Leadership. As a result of my dissertation work on team effectiveness, we developed the Team Essentials Model and Assessment, which we are now providing to the world.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We have a tendency to follow the economy like most business. The challenge has been to reinvent our company with the ebbs in flow of the economy, growing and contracting our business based on our clients reaction to the economy.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
The memory that has impacted my business the most and myself personally was when I was on a wrestling team in high school. We had a undefeated freshmen year and a in-loss matches sophomore year, we were a high performance team. Junior year we merged onto varsity team and life changed. Leadership was focused on only two individuals versus the overall team. The team fell apart and by senior year half the members did not go out for the team. For me, I never put closure on this experience and was not aware with it until working with a corporate client when reflecting on powerful stories of the past. I realized at that moment that I do the work that I do because of my high school experience and the impact of leadership upon team success.
