Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Paige.
Tiffany, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I left the corporate world after a merger, it got pretty ugly within my department so I knew it was time to do something else. I took my severance check and moved to NYC which had always been a dream of mine. I started interviewing right away and found myself interviewing for the same job I had just left in the same corporate world. After several months of this and many late night chats with my life partner Mike, we decided it was time to create something of my own.
I left NYC, which was a hard decision to make but I knew it was the right one. I came back to Chicago, and started drawing up ideas for what is now Modern Cooperative.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been a ton of hard work and dedication and I work all the time, but I love what I do so it never feels like work or a struggle.
We’ve gone through the typical small business struggles, but we’re very resourceful and don’t give up easily.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Modern Cooperative is a lifestyle boutique for the vintage modern and handmade enthusiast. We specialize in mid-century modern and contemporary home furnishings and home decor, jewelry, gifts and cards.
We’re known for our collection of vintage barware and sell too many bars and restaurants around Chicago and beyond.
I’m personally very proud of the fact that we support and sell over 80 local, handmade artists and designers. I feel really good about that!
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think Chicago is a great place to start a business, it’s still fairly affordable and it’s a city where you can make things happen for yourself without having a huge investment. We started ModCo on a very minimal amount of cash and just kept re-investing.
