Today we’d like to introduce you to Teri Healy.
Teri, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve dreamt about being a speaker for 30+ years and have a vision of helping people create extraordinary lives. I started designing workshops and keynote talks and honed my craft in the not-for-profit arena in 2014. Since I moved my passion into a business, I’ve had the privilege to present to a wide range of audiences.
This March I also began hosting a local radio show, Extraordinary Transformation which airs on WVLP 103.1 FM/WVLP.org. It has been my commitment to feature guests who are up to doing fabulous things in their community and/or offering insight that can enhance the lives of others. We have so much negative input in our world and I want to bring positive content to help balance the scales.
Mid-summer, I took a moment to consider how I could bring my radio to a new level. I asked myself “How can I serve?”. I was drawn to our youth. I created an empowerment program for kids age 12-19 called The Frequency of The Future. I work with them over a 6 week period and guide them to create their own radio broadcast. I believe that our kids have something to say to us and we need to be listening.
My program launched in August at the Boys And Girls Club in South Haven, IN and had a fantastic response! It is slated for more clubs and recently got the attention of the Lake county juvenile detention system.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest struggle has been accessing the audiences who need my work most. For example, I worked with court-mandated parents in Gary, IN when I first started out and had many hoops to get through before presenting. I have also spent many hours reaching out to schools throughout the south Chicago suburbs and NW Indiana with my radio empowerment program with no success or response.
Teri Healy – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I have a profound personal backstory of surviving obstacles that destroy others. I find that my message resonates with all audiences but have gotten the best feedback from women and youth organizations. What sets me apart from other speakers is the intention that I work from. I share my stories to help others and also provide hands-on tools for them to put into their toolboxes. When someone has the opportunity to hear me speak, I want them to leave the experience and not be able to go back to being the same person who walked into the room.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
A woman approached me who had heard me speak a few months prior. She thanked me. A few days after hearing me, she had a realization that she spent almost all of her time parenting by yelling at her kids. Up until that moment, she did not understand how her children were experiencing her as a mother. Once she stopped, she could finally “see” her kids as people for the first time. She was generous enough to show me their photos and tell me about the talents and gifts that they’d always possessed but she’d never seen. It was humbling. I could see the impact for her and her children and also could see how that changed the trajectory for who they couple with and how they raise their own. That was the moment that I knew that this was my calling and needed to be my full-time passion and occupation. I will be forever grateful to this woman for her vulnerability and the courage to share her story with me.
