Meet Susan Moran of Enzo’s Salon in Glenview

Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Moran.

Susan, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It started in WWII with my grandfather, Luigi, who had used his trade as a hair stylist to survive execution in Russian-occupied Italy. He then taught my father, Enzo, who became a barber and moved to the United States. I followed as a first generation American and third generation hair stylist, currently even co-owning my own salon.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As much as I love the industry, the business side to owning my salon has always been stressful. Taking responsibility for your other stylists, running the books, marketing and a plethora of other duties on top of being a full-time single mother of four is stressful. Regardless, I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Enzo’s Salon – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Enzo’s Hair Salon, in typical Italian fashion, strives to make everyone feel like part of the family. What makes me happy is not only making people look good, but making people feel good. Whether it be a confidence boosting cut or being someone to talk to, it’s reassuring to experience how easy it is to make someone’s day.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Being the only women’s hair stylist in my father’s barber shop when I was younger, there was no one to teach me how to formulate color, which is one of the most difficult parts of women’s hair. Without mentoring, I taught myself, and it has partially made me into the strong stylist I am today.

Nice family story! But how could you forget to mention your partner and sister, Maria Kost? A fantastic manicurist and business partner, she keeps the place going! Cudos!
