Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Hanks.

Susan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been working with animals all my life, working with Police and Government dogs. However, recently in the last 5 years God showed me the need of so many families and their animals that could use positive method training. So I started private in home training that is catered to the needs of that specific person/family and their animal. Instead of them getting overcharged and taken advantage of by harsh method trainers that didn’t want to show the people how to work with their own animals, or charge them for 20 unnecessary classes. It is a great need not just to train the animal. But to involve and work with the people as well, so they too know how to deal with numerous situations with their own animals. I address the need, evaluate the animal, so that we are teaching THAT individual animal, and work one on one with the owners so they feel comfortable doing the training as well and have a much better bond with their animals,

Has it been a smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road! It has been hard, being an honest company who honors God and my clients, versus big companies who are just out for the money to be made and treating clients with disdain. It is very hard to compete with bigger. When you just want to be “Better”. Technology also makes it difficult when you are only good with people and animals. I really don’t like the technical side of things.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business is a Christian based business and deals in all honesty and easy budgets so people that can’t afford thousands of dollars can still get certified and great training for their animals. It is indeed a ministry that helps not only the animals but the humans to feel empowered and loved as well. I am a Certified AKC~CGC Trainer/evaluator, covering basic and advanced obedience , service & therapy animals, I work with special needs children and adults with equine therapy, My specialty is aggression and problem issues,.. Animals can’t tell you why they are acting out. But as a behavioral specialist, I see a negative that is going on and show you how to change it to a positive. I am most proud of the fact that I honor God in what I do to help the people and the animals I come into contact with and they are friends…not just clients. What sets me apart from other trainers is that I evaluate the animal I am working with first and find its strengths and drives and teach it the way it learns. Not forcing methods on animals that don’t always learn in the same ways. Just as we as people don’t learn in the same ways

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Yes. I work all over the Chicago area. Having lived there myself at one point and as my business is nationwide. Chicago is a central hub to virtually everywhere I go. When starting out, it is best to find a need and meet that need in whatever you do, bring joy and to help others. This can be done in any city, especially Chicago .with its diversity that opens opportunities in anything if you have the passion and the gumption to make a go of it and to meet those needs for others along the way.
