Today we’d like to introduce you to Stuart Bernstein.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Stuart. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have a business background and an avid interest in entrepreneurship. I worked as an analyst in marketing and sales functions, learning who buys, what they buy, where and when they buy and to any extent possible, why before I started running departments, divisions and ultimately companies.
I’ve always focused on using data and process improvement to create a stronger voice for our customers, make better business decisions and increase employee engagement.
I started with the Gillette company at a time when they were trying to convince the world they needed a third blade on their razor, and continued working with manufacturers and retailers of consumer packaged goods. I met the owners of my current company, Revive Designer Bathrooms because of mutual interests in scaling companies.
Revive has an ambition to remodel every bathroom in America and I’m a huge fan of big audacious goals, so for the last two years, I have led Revive Designer Bathrooms and our efforts to achieve this goal. Our local business is a full-service design-build firm. We also have an e-commerce model that supports people’s nationwide remodeling efforts and we’re set up to franchise so there can be Revive’s in major and secondary cities throughout the country.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My wife and I have young children and read them many of the same books my parents read to me. There’s a line from Dr. Seuss’ “Oh the Places You’ll Go!” book that stands out:
You’ll get mixed up, of course, as you already know. You’ll get mixed up with many strange birds as you go. So be sure when you step. Step with care and great tact and remember that Life’s a Great Balancing Act. Just never forget to be dexterous and deft. And never mix up your right foot with your left.
I have definitely met a few strange birds, slipped and tripped and got confused along the way, but I’ve enjoyed the ride and have always felt that I’m the path I’m supposed to be on. So, I guess you can say it’s a bit of both–smooth sailing most of the time, but with a few bumps along the road, not to mix metaphors.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Revive Designer Bathrooms – what should we know?
Bathrooms, bathrooms, bathrooms. Remodeling brings to mind the expression: jack of all trades, master of none, so it’s a little unique that at Revive, we focus solely on bathroom remodels. Even better, I think we’re being rewarded for having carved out this niche.
We’re very cognizant of the fact that by focusing on just the bathroom, we’re remodeling the one room most frequently left off of the home tour. It’s a very intimate space for people and we respect that.
We created a values statement that permeates everything we do. Whether it’s a client interaction, company picnic or on the job, our five values help us create the best possible remodeling experience. At Revive Designer Bathrooms, we:
Do it well. Do it Right. Do it together. Do it with Style. Do it with a Smile.
This creates a pretty strong point of differentiation
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
There are a few characteristics that are important and we put them in our company mission so they’re constantly at the forefront of everything we do:
Be Ourselves. Be the Best. Build Something Beautiful.
– There’s a sincerity and genuineness to our team. Meeting Revive spouses and children, you can see our employees are the same people at home as they are on the job. I think design/build is a hobby as much as it is a job and our passion for it shows through
– We have a simple, yet powerful goal: to remodel every bathroom in America. For this privilege, we’ll have to cover all the bases: speed, value, ease, quality, progressive design. Whether or not the goal is attainable, the mantra drives better and smarter business decisions
– It is no coincidence that bathrooms are left out of our mission statement. Sure, it’s what we do, but by focusing on building something beautiful, it enables us to include the relationships and the experience we create for our clients as part of the build
All three of these have created what I feel is the most important formula for success.
