Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven McCurdy.
Steven, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It all started 8 years ago. I just was thinking about I need a different career. I have been a dental technician for about 30 years had my own dental lab for 4 years. I just needed a change and was trying to figure out what that would be. Limo driver popped into my head. I started checking out what it would take to become a limo driver. I took a class and got my chauffeur’s license. I called around to try to get part-time work on weekends so I could still make teeth during the week and work weekends as a limo driver to see if I like it. This gentleman Bruce gave me a chance driving one of his cars, he had a client that lived about two miles from where I did in Mokena so that worked out really good. I worked for Bruce for about 6 years. The company that was his client change CEOs and the CEO change limo companies. So then after 6 years working for Bruce, I had to try to find other limo companies to work for. I signed up with a couple limo companies in the Mokena area, Frankford area, and got into their cars and drove for them. Bruce let me use his car to maybe start my own business in case limo companies needed an extra car they could use me and then I would get a higher percentage for the order. Stan after doing that for a little while, I decided to start my own company went to an accountant and got Incorporated then I signed up with Google business to get on the search engines then I decided to develop my own limo app, Steve’s limo service and put it on the PlayStation on the Android phone and iTunes on the iPhone so people can download my app to connect to my business. That worked out pretty good. I picked up five or six clients, send a limo company that I was driving for. The gentleman decided he wanted to get out of the business and for the past 6 months I’ve been doing all his work and maybe by the end of the year we will work out a deal for me to buy his business. I also came into a great deal to buy a 2005 Lincoln Town Car stretch so I can do concerts and take five or six people to ball games so that pretty much brings me up to date.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes, it has been a pretty smooth road. I contribute that to my first boss Bruce. He explained the business was pretty good to me. He treated me real fair and I found out how fair he actually was when I started driving for some of the bigger companies like Windy City and Crown cars. I still work with Bruce. I give him orders and he gives me orders. I meet a few good owners and drivers who gives me work and I give them. All you have to do is be fair and honest and straightforward with everybody and things seem to go smooth.
Please tell us about Steve’s Limo Service.
I own and operate a limousine business I started out with a 2013 Lincoln MKT that my old boss let me take over payments and now I own that car and I ran into a good deal buying a 2005 Lincoln town car stretch 6 passenger. I have the best side of mechanics to keep my cars running smoothly and efficiently and most of all I have good drivers that I trust and they take good care of my clients and I take good care of my drivers.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My best childhood memory is the winter time in my hometown Dubuque, Iowa, going out with my friends in the neighborhood on our sleds.
