Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Miller.
Steve, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My wife and I started with 1 snow plow truck and zero kids in 1979. We have now grown to one of the largest commercial snow plow companies in our area. 3 out of 5 of our kids now run most of the business.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Our business depends on the weather. Weak winters are hard on us financially and big winters take a toll on the guys. Lots of hours and not a lot of sleep. We also see our business fluctuate with the economy.

During the spring and summer we sell/install landscape material. During the fall we get ready for the winter. During the winter we do commercial snow plowing. Snow plowing is our main business. We are known for being a family run business that specializes in adapting to our customers’ needs. We really work hard to keep our customers happy. I think what sets us apart from other companies is that we spend a lot of time preparing and training so that when the snow comes we are ready. We want to get it done right the first time.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up in Naperville as an only child to divorced parents and spent my summers on my Grandpa’s farm in Indiana. My one and only interest has always been airplanes. I bought my first airplane when I was 16. I now have a hangar in DeKalb that my son and I house our planes. I have always worked for myself. I have always had too many ideas and found it hard to be told what to do (except by my wife).
