Today we’d like to introduce you to Steve Cotton.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve been in the window business for years and I started out working for a local company as the Director of Operations. About 11 years ago the company I was working for downsized and I was laid off. Unemployed and frustrated I went back to school to complete my bachelor degree in business management. While working on my degree I waited tables at a local restaurant to support myself and my family. Upon completing my degree, I decided to start my own business.
This was a difficult time to start a business due to the change in the economy and the lack of capital. However, I felt there was a need for a local window contractor in neighborhoods on the south and west side of Chicago. As the company started getting clients we realized the void wasn’t just in window contractors but also other services like doors and siding. As the business grew we started providing those additional services to our customers.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has been a rocky road, from obtaining new customers to funding the business. I found myself competing with the big box stores in pricing and proving financing to my customers. Due to the location of my office and the proximity of owner occupied houses I found myself marketing to consumers outside the area of my office and showroom. I also was able to ascertain a relationship with a finance company to provide financing to my customers. The program allows consumers to purchase home improvement projects with 0% programs and funds the project in stages to allow cash flow to fund the projects.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a local home improvement company that specialize in windows however, we offer additional products and services like doors, siding, and gutters. Majority of the windows we install are vinyl however, we offer wood and aluminum windows as well. Our entry door systems are made from steel if you are concerned about protection and fiberglass to give you a natural wood look. The siding is mostly vinyl but we have other options as well.
What role has luck (good luck or bad luck) played in your life and business?
I honestly don’t believe in luck good or bad, I believe in hard work and dedication. Therefore, I would have to say luck hasn’t played a role in my business. I also believe in doing the right thing over and over again, when things aren’t going so smoothly. If you are consistent, honest, and a hard worker things will eventually work out.
