Meet Stephanie Rogers of Story Jam in West Loop-City Winery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Rogers.

Stephanie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started Story Jam about three years ago. The show combines live storytelling with original music played by a ten-piece band. The music directly echoes every story. Imagine “The Moth Radio Hour,” but with personalized songs played after each story.

After obtaining a degree in theatre from Northwestern University, I acted in commercials and plays, and sang lead in many rock bands. I have been a professional musician and singer-songwriter for many years, and my background is mostly rock and pop music. I started Story Jam to bring music to the art of storytelling, and to create a platform for diverse artists to engage and connect with audiences through live, real, truth-infused performance.

We gather artists from a variety of cultures, races, neighborhoods, backgrounds, sexualities, physical differences, genders, ages, mindsets and experiences to produce Story Jam, and every show is wholly original and unique.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has been pretty smooth! We have great crowds and the audiences are very engaged. This is a pretty new concept, so it still feels very fresh.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Story Jam – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Our show is different from other shows because: 1. We have a great band playing; 2. The band plays ORIGINAL music written specifically for the songs; and 3. We represent the many diverse people of Chicagoland.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Like best: The realness. The rawness. Chicago people are amazing.

Like worst: The traffic and parking.
