Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonya Ulrich.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Sonya. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’ve always loved animals of every kind but my story truly starts with a cute little German Shepherd puppy named Mickey. Not long after my husband and I bought our first home we started looking for a puppy. We researched and found a reputable breeder with a great reputation. Her puppies had health clearances, great temperaments, awesome genetic lines, and to top it all off he was ADORABLE. He was the perfect puppy. What could possibly go wrong? 🙂
It didn’t take very long for me to realize that I was in over my head. Teaching him “sit”, “down”, and “come” was relatively easy but it wasn’t helping me with jumping, potty training issues, destructive behavior, biting, etc. I needed help. Luckily I found a great trainer who really listened to what I was struggling with. She taught me how to bring out the best in Mick and he ended up being a pretty amazing guy. Training dogs have been a part of my life ever since.
I wanted to learn more so I started fostering and working with as many dogs as I could because I truly loved the training process. As I said, I had always loved dogs but training them not only brought out the best in them…I felt it brought out the best in me. I gave up my office job and found a part-time job to help pay the bills while I started my training business. It wasn’t easy, but I would do it again in a second.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My biggest struggle was definitely overcoming shyness and the fear of public speaking. There wasn’t a quick fix for this particular problem! It just took time to become comfortable speaking in front of a group. I even found it difficult during one on one classes. Knowing how to train a dog is totally different than knowing how to teach another person to train a dog.

A private home-based dog training business that offers group classes, private classes, and board & train packages.
The programs that I offer are created to benefit all dogs, including the dogs that other trainers have turned away or are unwilling to work with. Most dogs know some or even all of the basic commands, they just pick and choose when they are going to respond. To me, the value is in the reliability of the response and that’s why I’ve made it a key component in all of my programs
My goal is to provide owners with the help, answers, and results they need along with the respect and compassion they deserve.
