Today we’d like to introduce you to Shilan Fine.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Shilan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
One summer, I was invited to a party at a trout farm in Wisconsin, this is where my path crossed with the owner of Younghi and Associates, a boutique accessories sales agency here in Chicago. A few weeks later, I was offered a job to manage her showroom at the Apparel Center. This was the first time I was offered a job from a party.
When my mentor decided to move into the fine jewelry business I was inspired to launch my own business. I began my sales agency in 1990 representing American brands and artisan made jewelry. Along the way, I have asked and received great advise from our customers and designers.
Has it been a smooth road?
My journey has not been smooth nor easy. I enjoyed the process, I definitely learn quickly from my mistakes. The challenge has been wearing the different hats of a small business owner. Mostly, I have found challenges in delegating and setting boundaries when managing my relationship with designers and employees.

My business, Shilan Accessories Ltd., is a sales agency representing modern jewelry and handbag brands and designers. I am known to work with American and Canadian designers and artisans. As my business has evolved, I have focused more on the partnership with American jewelry artisans.
I am most proud of the long-term friendships with our designers and customers. My business and design insights which I share with our clients and designers has set me apart from our competition.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Our city is a wonderful place to start a business like mine. I would recommend Chicago as a good place for any founder of a new business.
