Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelley Young.
Shelley, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Not sure if the question is how “I” got started or “The Chopping Block” got started. I suppose the common denominator would be a passion for creating environments where people can thrive.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think all roads have some bumps and I do not believe ours would be out of the norm, financing, HR, city regulations and restrictions are generally where we have come up against the most challenges.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with The Chopping Block – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We are Chicago’s busiest recreational cooking school, probably one of the largest in the country. That in itself is no small feet, this is a challenging industry and few companies even with very deep pockets have been able to stay in business at all, let alone prosper. I think we have done that through a true commitment to the quality of customer and employee experience, my theory is happy employees…happy customers…happy customers…profit. Also loads of drive on my end.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We see many opportunities in culinary education. The professional Culinary School system is in some distress and that of course means opportunity for us. We offer all the culinary skill training available at professional schools we just package our education differently. After 20 years in business we see very clearly that their is an opportunity to package culinary education in a new way to create a more affordable, adaptable and accessible professional education.
