Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Terry.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in Lincoln Park, which was MUCH different back then. Almost every summer, my parents took us out of the neighborhood on road trips in the U.S. or we went overseas. That’s when my passion for travel began. And back then, I had either disposable or point-and-shoot cameras. I started taking pictures of landscapes and cityscapes. So it was really grade school and high school when my passion for travel and photography (and later content creation) began.
In the last few years, I started getting into Instagram as a creative outlet. My first post was really bad and clichéd. It was a shot of my hand holding a green beer for St. Patrick’s Day. Over these last few years, I’ve been inspired by other Instagrammers to really up my game. Last year, I bought my first drone. And my wife and son bought me a Canon. I also started attending photography meetups, whoever I’ve met a lot of great people and also learned some tips for shooting better.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Every time I shoot, it’s a challenge. There are different subjects, different lighting conditions, etc. And as I’m relatively new to shooting with a camera (vs. an iPhone), there’s a lot to learn. But I enjoy the challenge and work to get better every day.
Scott Terry – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
It’s less of a business than a hobby or side gig for me. Most of what I do is not for pay but in exchange for product or services that I genuinely like. There are basically two different types of services I provide. One is to create content for brands that I post on my Instagram (photos, cinemagraphs, plotagraphs, time-lapse videos, etc.). I guess the term is influencer but I’m really not a fan of that term. The other is to create content that I send to brands to post on their social media. I’ve also consulted with executives, editors, community managers and small businesses on helping build their Instagram following, engagement and creating better content.
As far as what sets me apart, I like to think it’s my well-roundedness in terms of the content I can create. I’m not a professional photographer as I have too much to learn still. But I can take pretty good photos, as well as create engaging video content like plotagraphs and cinemagraphs.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I’ve started to get to the point where brands are reaching out to me directly as they’ve seen my prior work and want to partner with me. It used to be that I was relying solely on “influencer agencies” and reaching out to brands directly. So it’s pretty cool that they are now reaching out to me.
