Meet Scott Greenberg of Hotel EMC2 in Streeterville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Greenberg.

Scott, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am a Chicago real estate developer and I have earned a reputation for developing a lifestyle, innovative, and one of a kind hotels. For example, eight years ago, I developed and operate theWit hotel. At the time, there were a series of groundbreaking trends that I started with the development of that property.

In the end of May, I opened Hotel EMC2, which is a 195 room hotel with a ground floor restaurant. My new hotel mission is to explore the intersection of science and art and inspire and awaken a sense of curiosity from our guests.

The most powerful and meaningful impact for me of opening this hotel is hearing from guests how emotionally moving the experience has been to visit and stay at this special destination.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Opening a hotel like Hotel EMC2 requires deep commitment and focus on the million details that go into it. It takes years and years of planning in all things involved in building the structure, but also a concerted effort to thoughtfully and tastefully integrate its theme of the intersection of art and science.

For instance, part of the design involved us collecting over 12,000 vintage math, science, and art books and thoughtfully place these books in over 300 separate bookshelves. The number of details in design and execution of this building is a multiple of what typically developers and owners might spend time on.

This hotel has introduced a number of innovations and technological feats that no other hotel on earth has used. The hotel has its own robots, Alexa in all rooms, video art through the hotel, video art which is actually directly integrated into the functioning of the destination custom elevators. Functioning artwork includes a seven-foot-tall zoetrope in the lobby, an acoustical amplify in each guest room, an illuminated magnifying glass on each guest room door entrance.

The hotel has a series of unique features in the bar area ( an infusary ) and kitchen that guests can separate dine in and meeting rooms. All of this one-of-kind functioning artwork need to conceived, designed, engineered, refined, tested and successfully integrated with the function of the hotel so the hotel could function every day. This is the type of thing that large companies like Disney do when they design a theme park. However, we did it in a boutique hotel.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Hotel EMC2 – what should we know?
As a developer, I am known as innovative and change agent in every project I take on. Hotel EMC2 is no different.

This Hotel is not like anything else on earth. Guests find it to be a beautiful, meaningful, and wonderful place to visit.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
My ability conceive and execute complex projects, which takes years and years to accomplish.

I surround myself with a talented team of designers, engineers, and hospitality professionals. My job is to inspire these talented people and provide clear direction to these people so they can effectively accomplish their jobs.
