Meet Sarah Natalie of Maxon Shooter’s Supplies and Indoor Range in Des Plaines

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Natalie.

Sarah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been interested in the shooting sports from a young age. I participated in both Marine Corps JROTC in high school and Air Force ROTC in college where I learned a lot about the firearms used by the US military. After college I became a regular shooter at my local range and took as many classes as I could from professional instructors like Mas Ayoob and Bob Houzenga with Midwest Training Group. I eventually became an instructor myself and when the opportunity presented itself to work at Maxon Shooter’s Supplies, I jumped at it. Maxon has been around for 30 years and had just moved into a beautiful new location in Des Plaines when I started working for the company 4 years ago, under the previous owners. As the general manager I am extremely proud of what the staff has been able to accomplish in that short time. We have established ourselves as the first 5 star range in Illinois as designated by the National Shooting Sports Foundation. Only about 80 ranges in the country have earned this credential. Under new ownership for the past 2 years, we have made improvements to our website, class offerings, range lighting, firearm selection and much more. We received very positive feedback from our customers and continue to improve and innovate. Maxon employs 27 staff members and the company is seeing steady growth. We pride ourselves on our knowledgeable and friendly staff, welcoming and inclusive environment and clean and safe ranges. I like to say that we don’t sell guns here, we sell relationships. The relationship that a customer establishes with our staff is the most important thing to us. We are here every step of the way.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Running a gun shop in Cook County requires one to have thick skin and an iron will. Unfortunately law abiding citizens get blamed for the violence problem in Chicago when it comes to guns. Rather than leaving the law abiding gun owners alone, it is easier for politicians to blame gun shops and legal gun owners for the failure of the court system to enforce the laws that are already on the books when it comes to unlawful use of a weapon. If more illegal gun possessors were incarcerated, it would cut down on the willingness that these criminals have to carry and use a weapon illegally. We are fighting for the rights of our law abiding customers at every turn and we will continue to stand up for their rights and the rights of our lawful business.
