Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Carolan.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I think my story has been a journey in overcoming imposter syndrome.
As a child, I loved to draw and was encouraged to do so by my family. Still, it took a long time to reconcile art as, “I’m a hobby-artist,” and art as a means of self-expression and therapy—even with my graduating from art school, and working as a professional graphic designer.
About two years ago I decided to make a habit of drawing daily and sharing my work. It gave me the confidence I needed to take this practice seriously. But more importantly, it became a way to relieve my stress and anxiety.
Art was much more innate and necessary to my wellbeing than I had given it credit, and something I would never neglect again.
Please tell us about your art.
I think at the core, I’d like my art to be relatable and comforting to others.
Much of my work focuses on plants and women; themes of growth, strength and vulnerability.
All of us have—or do—battle with dark thoughts, feelings of self-doubt and insecurity. For me, my confidence has been a slow process of building and rebuilding. And my art celebrates this personal journey–the blooming of self through perseverance.
We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
Sharing artwork on social media certainly helps widen your audience, and provides opportunities to connect with like-minded people. I’d also suggest getting involved with your local AIGA.
My favorite creative-community has got to be Creative Mornings though. It’s a free breakfast-lecture series that happens once a month, and has chapters all over the world. They continually have great speakers (often local), and the CM community as a whole is so nice and supportive.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Instagram is probably the best place to view my work, as it’s the platform I update regularly (instagram.com/studio_ashleen). And please feel free to reach out through a DM or email, if you have any questions about posted artwork and/or prints.
I also have an Etsy store (http://www.etsy.com/shop/studioashleen), and a Society6 page (society6.com/studioashleen).
