Today we’d like to introduce you to Sapan Shah, M.D., J.D..
Flagship Healthcare was started in 2007 by Sapan Shah, M.D., J.D. and Jason P. Shah, M.D. to advocate for private practice physicians. Given his background as a physician and attorney, Sapan focused on helping private practice physicians understand and address malpractice risk cost-effective solutions and aggressive representation on their behalf.
This approach resonated with the physician community and Flagship became a fast growing malpractice insurance brokerage in Illinois and now nationally. Flagship simultaneously developed relationships with many strong carrier partners to offer their clients a breadth of choices and a comprehensive analysis of their options.
Since they placed their first policy in 2007, Flagship has grown to represent over 1200 physicians over many states. In November 2017, Flagship joined Alera Group to offer niche malpractice insurance solutions across the country.
Today Flagship helps private practice physicians stay independent and profitable and provides expertise to healthcare entities to effectively manage risk.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Entrepreneurship always has its challenges, especially for a pure startup like Flagship. We struggled with cash flow and early sales when we were still building our reputation. The first two years, we didn’t take any salary, leaving all revenue in the business to fuel growth. However, we built a solid foundation and developed our early reputation to support increased sales and revenue, ultimately growing 41 out of 42 quarter before being acquired in Nov. 2017. Along the way, friends and family were quite supportive, especially my wife, Rachna Shah, MD, who paid our personal bills for several years while Flagship was developing!

We are brokers for malpractice insurance for doctors and hospitals.
Our distinct advantage in the marketplace is our education background- our brokers are physicians and attorneys themselves and understand professional liability in great detail. I am both a physician and attorney and this has given us a reputation of expertise and integrity. Above all, we identify with our clients on a fundamental level as physicians. Further, we strongly feel that the independent practice of medicine is key for patients and the country as a whole, and our business mission is to help doctors stay independent.
What were you like growing up?
I was always interested in many things including sports, education and research. I worked hard and did well in school, but also greatly enjoyed playing soccer and watching football.
