Meet Sadie Benning

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sadie Benning.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I grew up in a very artistic family; my mother is an interior designer and my grandmother makes jewelry. Growing up surrounded by strong, artistic women had a positive influence on me and my career. I first picked up a ‘real’ camera when I was 14, a hand me down from my dad. While I was immediately drawn to video, I dabbled in photography as well, which has helped me build a strong foundation in cinematography. I got my first ‘job’ as a sophomore in high school videoing the music club’s performances. Lately, I’ve been focusing on both cinematography and social media advertising.

Please tell us about your art.
As an artist, I diversify myself as much as possible. I have a strong foundation in photography, doing senior and family photos, which is essential to working as a cinematographer.

I also graduated from Beauty College in 2017, and having my cosmetology degree gives me a unique insight into beauty advertising. I’m currently managing social media for a hair salon. As someone who has experience in the beauty industry, photography, video, and social media, I offer a unique insight into beauty advertising.

I am also doing an internship as a script reader writing coverage. I’m very passionate about screenwriting. I want to be able to help people communicate and express themselves, whether that’s through their family photos, a product they’re selling, or making their dream movie.

What do you think about conditions for artists today? Has life become easier or harder for artists in recent years? What can cities like ours do to encourage and help art and artists thrive?
Taking whatever opportunities you can get are essential to being an artist. I’m always surprised how one project can lead to another. I would say that over half of the battle is getting your name out there. Nothing makes me happier than having a constant stream of work. At any given time I’m working on 3 or more projects, some which have nothing to do with each other. Dedicating the time and putting in the effort is the rest of the battle.

Keeping yourself busy is so important to building momentum in your work. I love constantly being kept on my toes and pushing myself. I’m always looking for new projects that challenge me.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
