Today we’d like to introduce you to Rudy Hall.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born in Ft. Collins, Colorado and shared a wonderful childhood with my three older brothers – all of whom were a tremendous influence on my early creative development as we would often create fantastic worlds together and record them on paper. With my parent’s undying support, I left home and traveled across the country to attend the Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia. In the south, I made a group of close friends with which I moved to Chicago after graduating with a degree in Sequential Art.
In Chicago, we formed the creative house Studio of the MONTH – working on many projects in graphic design, web design/programming, and traditional illustration. During the 8 or so years that we ran SOTM – I also began work on the Chicago river and eventually became a river boat captain. The complement of Marine Captain and the arts has helped lead me to where I am today.
Now, in Logan Square, I have transitioned to freelance illustration and fine art – having my work displayed at a number of locations around Chicago. The Rotunda Studio has also played host to a number of DIY art, open mic, and concert events with more to come.
I’m very happy to have been able to reduce my work outside the studio to part time over the past couple years and now focus on personal painting, works for various group shows, my first mural in the works, and illustrations for Setti Games.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have to say I’ve been fortunate in opportunities that have presented themselves – though there are always challenges to overcome. The struggle has mainly presented itself as a matter of balancing the production of the artwork along with the self-promotion and business side of representing oneself in the art world. I am typically much more comfortable diving into the world inside my head and creating in the studio as opposed to pushing that work in the real world – however, it is a side of the lifestyle that cannot be neglected.
ZELLLO – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I primarily work doing commissioned artwork and traditional illustrations for my friends at Setti Games. My work has a heavy focus on fantasy and highly stylized comic-book illustration.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The moment I was able to make my first sale of original artwork – as well as being able to cut back on full-time work outside of the arts.
