Today we’d like to introduce you to Ron Hines.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I studied photography briefly at Columbia College in Chicago. After a year, the cost and feeling that I’d be better off assisting an established shooter led me to leave; and seek to freelance as an assistant. I freelanced for about 6 months before I got a full-time job as an assistant at a large catalog studio. There I learned lighting from some talented photographers. We shot only film then and used tungsten lights. Using those continues light sources taught to really see light. I also became acquainted with all the other aspects that went into creating a look or style for a photo used for advertising, i.e. stylists, art directors, prep stylists, etc. It was valuable training. Eventually I moved up to photographer and after 3 1/2 yrs. I started freelancing, and I’ve been doing that ever since.
Please tell us about your art.
I do portraits of people and still life. I now shoot all digital. I’ll use black and white or color, depending on the story or feeling that I want to convey. The inspiration varies. It could be a movie scene or still, a painting, or something I see in the city. I see everything as a portrait and I adapt the lighting, colors, and treatment to try to convey a feeling. I know it when I see it, sometimes. LOL!
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing artists today?
The same as always, being true to yourself.
