Today we’d like to introduce you to Romeo Oros.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always loved making things. There’s nothing better than the feeling of creating something from nothing. I didn’t set out with a grand plan to own a design agency. The thing that has always driven me, that drives me still, has been the desire to be surrounded by and collaborate with like-minded creative people.
I went to art school with the intention of being a painter. Along the way, I fell into graphic design. I began with small projects, creating work for friends’ bands and local restaurants. These were great learning experiences. I found that I loved this new medium, the intersection of technology and design. The problem-solving aspects of design really appealed to the left-side of my brain.
I met my business partner Brent Lewis shortly after graduating. He needed someone to handle the visual front end, I needed a developer, and that’s how our company FuturePerfekt was born. We’ve been working together for over a decade now. Brent is a genius developer who can build pretty much anything. Having this strong foundation allows me the freedom to push my creative boundaries further.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The path to starting a company is never as smooth as you’d hope. For me, the biggest challenge was being able to take the leap and give up the security of a day job. Something that they never teach you in art school is how to value your work. Ironically, working at a small agency for a number of years taught me how to become a savvy freelancer.
My company FuturePerfekt started small. We took our time—working nights and weekends until we had built up a robust portfolio of clients and felt comfortable enough to commit 100% to doing this full-time. A continuous challenge is learning to scale. Balancing the quantity of work while maintaining day-to-day tasks is something we’re adjusting along the way.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the FuturePerfekt story. Tell us more about the business.
FuturePerfekt is a boutique creative agency that specializes in web and print design and user experience. We work with mostly small and medium-sized businesses to develop their brands from concept to market. The types of businesses range from high-end furniture companies, architects, interior designers, restaurants, and more. We also provide art direction for large advertising agencies. At the end of the day, we are creative problem solvers.
I’m most proud of the fact that even as we’ve scaled up and our clients have gotten bigger, our standards remain high. I love providing pitch concepts for a client like Airbnb and winning!
I think what sets FuturePerfekt apart from others is our diverse capabilities, interests, and backgrounds that allow us to bring fresh ideas to any kind of problem. We also have the awareness that even though we’re dealing with technology, what we’re really doing is trying to connect people and communicate ideas. We strive for clarity in everything we do, speaking in simple human terms. Our clients are still people, not faceless corporate entities. Nobody likes to be bogged down by jargon and lengthy and confusing contracts.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t think good or bad luck has much of a role in my life. I think it’s less about luck and more about being aware and open to opportunities when they’re presented. And, of course, experience helps one make better decisions.
