Today we’d like to introduce you to Rob Mulsoff.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Rob. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The past 20 years, I’ve been fortunate to concept, art direct, copywrite, manage and execute campaigns and programs for a wide variety of clients from packaged goods to healthcare, dog food to cell phones, air fresheners to whiskey. Although I loved the work I was doing at some of the larger downtown agencies, I always felt an urge to discover more and push the limits of creative freedom. And to top it off, do it all in the suburbs.
After years of careful consideration, at the end of 2014, I made the life-changing decision to create my own agency, partnering with two amazing creatives, Gene Zak and Brandon Dierker along with Mike Enright, whom I worked with at previous downtown agencies, to assist with new business and client relations.
The first two years were a grind and we really had to hustle to make a name for ourselves. We spent a good amount of time forming our agency brand, as well as instilling our values into the way we wanted to work. With hard work, a little luck and timing, we quickly began to pick up the pace and gained several re-branding and social media projects from various restaurants, an occupational health service, and a local distillery. We also were introduced to the Washington State market working with a few wineries.
Our big break came in the spring of 2016, when our agency was asked to participate in a RFP for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago. There were many agencies in this pitch that had national and international offices and we were definitely the smallest agency. That energized us to come up with completely different thinking and a new thought process on the assignment. After months of planning, phone calls, meetings, and rounds of presentations, in August of 2016, we were thrilled to be informed that Pixelarium had been awarded agency of record for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Chicago. This fundamentally changed our agency and continues to change us to this very day. We’re extremely humbled and honored that our work will be key in changing the lives of so many of Chicago’s youth and continue to strive to discover the best, most creative solutions to maximize our impact on this great city we call home.
This also opened the door for us to partner and create meaningful work for other non-profits such as Kids Rank (Currently a Board Member) and Cabrini Green Legal Aid.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Nothing is ever a smooth road, but that’s what makes life interesting. There’s this misconception that suburb agencies are not good and can’t compete against the larger agencies in the city. We may not have an image of a hipster drinking PBR while playing foosball on our website, but at the end of the day everyone deserves good work and that can come from anywhere. We pride ourselves on bringing together the best talent from all over the area, city and suburbs, to create work and campaigns that are unique and separate ourselves from “The Sea of Sameness”. That being said, we have to work harder to prove ourselves and challenge the “Suburban Agency Myth”.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
An image is made up of a matrix of thousands of pixels. Each pixel alone is small and one-dimensional.
But a collection of pixels, strategically placed to work together, can create a vivid masterpiece.
Like images, our studio is composed of a group of marketing professional pixels: Strategic architects. Creative storytellers. Pop culture connoisseurs. Dynamic thinkers. Daydreamers. Every team member has a different area of expertise and passion.
Through our collaborative creative process, we build upon each another to put the right pixels in place that ensure our clients brands’ capture imagination and tell a compelling story.
At Pixelarium we don’t take things at face value. Because when you only look at the surface, you end up with ordinary. It’s when you look deeper, work harder, think smarter that interesting things begin to happen.
We are a Visual Storytelling Studio. Storytelling helps create a connection with your audience that’s authentic and opens a door into the lives of those who have cultural, family, personal challenges and triumphs in life.
Our team specializes in branding, web design, graphic design, and social media marketing. Our agency model is to retain a core base of talented individuals, but we also keep it simple so we can reach out to our network of professional friends to help with specific tailored assignments.
What were you like growing up?
I feel like I grew up in a John Hughes movie with funny family characters, baseball cards, neon big wheels, bad floppy hair and an 80’s soundtrack playing in the background… probably a Wang Chung tune.
