Today we’d like to introduce you to Reynaldo Quesada.
Reynaldo, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I worked for Alltypes Fireplace for 25 years as an installer. Installed for 15, sales-install for 10 yrs. When the economy fell in ‘08 I bought the company, not knowing what economy meant. Three of my sons with the help of Mike struggled. Ten other fireplace companies closed within two years.
Low pay helped our doors stay open. We saw a light at the end of the tunnel. We have moved twice looking for the right location all in the same neighborhood. We are to stay. Two of my sons have left to pursue their careers. My fourth son has joined the company in sales. Mike has retired and is doing well. The Marine Corps taught me to never give up, Sept 4th was our ninth year in business. Our pay is much better, thank you.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No road is ever smooth (been married for 35 years). Some of the curves in our road were with credit THIRTY DAYS comes really quick, rent at our previous location went over ninety thousand a year for twenty-four hundred square feet. After two and a half years, it’s still empty. Small business taxes in this state are what they are. The politicians need to eat better than the rest of us.
Customers, I remember laying down their credit cards and saying, Thank You. Now, customers ask three times “is this the best you can do?”
Competing with the internet is a challenge. We tell the internet customer, have the internet repair our install it for you. Or you can buy it from us a small family brick and mortar store. You’ll get all warranties and installations honored. Finding a reliable work force is the biggest challenge. Playing with the internet or cell phone is not classified as work.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Greenforest Fireplace & patio – what should we know?
We specialize in fireplace installations and repair. Quality outdoor furniture and barbecue grills. We are known for service, repair and if I come to your house for an estimate I am your installer as well. Having a showroom with all the latest technologies and trends is something to be proud of.
Having my family and sons standing behind the business is very comforting. Returning to customers’ homes and seeing their children grow is rewarding. We have customers dating back over twenty years. What sets us apart from others is, we are still having fun at what we love to do. Satisfying friends.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
The previous owner deserves much credit I learned a lot of do’s and don’ts. Mostly learn from others’ mistakes.
I have seen many true craftsmen in this trade and learned much from them. Many friends have retired. It gives me a warm feeling remembering their names and faces.
Accounting is up most important. Get someone that is strong, pushy and stern. Yet friendly and caring. Going to all the trade shows and classes related to the business regularly has a big role in our success. Never too old to see new and improved. Keep up with the new technologies on repair is essential.
