Meet Rebecca Shunick of b. / A Salon on Armitage in Lincoln Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Shunick.

Rebecca, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I opened b. / A Salon on Armitage in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago in November 2011. Before launching b., I had the pleasure of working not only at some of Chicago’s most renowned salons, earning rave reviews for my skills as both a stylist and as a colorist. But also toured the country as an educator, educating other stylists on color and styling techniques. My salon started with myself and 2 stylists and has now grown to 9 stylists and 1 esthetician. Not to mention, we have an exceptional education program individually tailored for our new assistants.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Nothing this great ever comes easy. When I was opening, I would often joke with my architect that whatever could go wrong, did go wrong! Whether it was getting permits and navigating City Hall to working with my 2 stylists and girlfriends cleaning the night away before our opening day, it has been one fun ride! I enjoy taking on new and difficult challenges, so the more I am told that I “can’t do something”, the more I want to prove people that not only I can do it, I can do it well.

b. / A Salon on Armitage – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
What I wanted for b. was to give our neighborhood an upscale, family friendly salon. But I also wanted to make it known that what you are getting in a warm, comfortable and friendly environment, you were not sacrificing quality or luxury on any level. It was very important to me that my salon offers the best of the best products and services for our guests and education to my stylists.

My team prides themselves on not only the loyalty of our clientele and the referrals of family and friends our clients bring in, but also the standards we set for ourselves. Our stylists specialize in dimensional color for rich long, lasting results. Perfectly tailored haircuts and long lasting smoothing treatments as well as extensions for hair. While you are visiting us, we can also offer waxing and skin treatments such as facials, microdermabrasion and peels along with the very best skincare products.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success to me, is being able to do what you love and make a career out of it. I have been extraordinarily blessed by the beauty industry and am so thankful for the past 5 years of my business, what keeps me moving forward are small markers I set for myself every year. The first few years of my business, I had a 3, 5 and 10 year goals that were financially driven, but I have found that, money markers are just too broad. So, the past 2 years, I have set more specific goals for myself and my business that if I can achieve them, the financial gains just come with the territory. Such as, this year, my goal for the salon was to ramp up our social media presence and community marketing. In that, we have not only acquired new guests looking for specific haircuts and colors they found online that we did, one of our stylists was featured in a local magazine.
