Today we’d like to introduce you to Ramsay Marston.
Ramsay, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started off by wanting to be a labor/delivery nurse actually. I had gone thru 2 years of general courses and decided it wasn’t for me. I enrolled in cosmetology school full time, 40 hours a week. 10 months later I had graduated 2nd in my class.
My first salon was in Lake Zurich, IL. I loved it, but wanted more. So I applied at the salon in the city’s Gold coast area, called TRIO Salon where I was trained with the Vidal Sassoon cutting technique. I finished their apprentice program and was on the floor for 4 years. I became an educator as well.
I left TRIO and moved to Guadalajara, México for 5 months to be with my now fiancé. After moving back, I started at a new salon called Nichole.Beck Hair Boutique in Lakeview.
The beginning of 2017 I wanted to start a new chapter so I ventured out and am now at my OWN studio in Lincoln Park.
I love being creative, expressing myself through photoshoots, NYFW, bridal and print.
Has it been a smooth road?
I don’t think any road is smooth. You’re going to have some bumps, hiccups along the way. That is what helps make you stronger and know what you want/don’t want in your life.
I think the biggest hurdle for me has been this past year. I have always been in a salon atmosphere, so going out on my own has been a challenge, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.
I love the opportunities I have been given and I am excited for more things to come!
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Ramsay Marston Hair story. Tell us more about the business.
I am the owner of my studio.
I was trained in only cutting/styling in my early career, but thanks to the girls at Nichole.Beck Hair Boutique they taught me so much about color. Which I have been loving!
Balayage is very in, it’s easy, low maintenance, and you can make it more personal for each client.
Pastel/fashion color is a big thing for me too.
Vidal Sassoon will always be a big part of my style of cutting/styling. I love the strong shapes and lines.
I feel like I am known for my braids, I always like to try new things and learn new techniques.
My attention to detail, and giving my clients a style/color they can work with daily is very important to me. A haircut is something that should grow out beautifully, I want everyone to be able to recreate what I have done for them.
If they can’t do that, then I haven’t done my job.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I think people will become more bold and believe in themselves and go out and have their own spaces.
It’s a jump, but just take the first step. It’ll be so rewarding. I think more people should feel that way.
