Today we’d like to introduce you to Philip Atteberry.
Philip, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am an entrepreneur that specializes in bringing new technologies and businesses to the market. I graduated from Vanderbilt University with a degree in Chemical Engineering and Mathematics, but quickly realized that I wanted to pursue a career in sales and marketing. I began my career at a small instrumentation firm and then started a mobile marketing company with my father that brought trade shows in a tractor trailer truck to industrial locations (This was before the internet). I then went into the corporate world where I became the US regional manager for a large chemical corporation and then worked for Siemens for 6 years running their hosted security business. I worked for another large company after that, but knew as soon as I left Siemens that I wanted to be on my own. I was always successful in large companies because of my entrepreneur attitude toward businesses and projects. It would sometimes get me in trouble, but in the end, I always came out on top because I always took the hard businesses and projects and succeeded. As I went on my own, I wanted to purchase a business. I looked for several in the Chicago area with my business partner, but never found something that was going to give me the satisfaction of helping the community and also making a living. That is until I opened our first Brightside Clinic in Northbrook, IL. Brightside is a unique outpatient clinic that focuses only on treating people with opiate addiction. Our technique is different than other providers in the market and we have had so much wonderful success in getting people off opiates and regaining their lives. Since then, we opened our second clinic in Tinley Park and look to add more in the Chicago and Midwest region.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
My career has been like a baby with an etch a sketch. I have done so many things and come to my final career with so many ups and downs that people laugh when I tell them I am a Chemical Engineer. I would have to say for all of my successes, I have had just as many failures. At the early stage of my career, my biggest struggles were trying to figure out what I wanted to do as well as have a healthy marriage. But, thankfully, I have a wonderful wife that not only encouraged me, but also coached me as I furthered my career. Once I was a little more established in the corporate world, the struggles were larger and impacted more people. I still remember having to reduce my operations at Siemens due to losing a large client. Nothing makes you more humble than when your decisions can affect the lives of other people. Now that I am on my own, the struggles are much bigger, but I accept them and am excited about facing them.
Being a small business owner with a true passion about what you’re doing can be so empowering and scary at the same time. But, the people that we are helping have so many more struggles than me, that I am humbled by their accomplishments to overcome this horrible addiction and regain their life. My heroes are my patients and I constantly look to them for inspiration as I face my own struggles in life and business.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Brightside Clinic story. Tell us more about the business.
Our company is called Brightside. We are in the business of saving lives. We are an outpatient clinic that specializes in treating people suffering from opiate addiction with the best doctors and revolutionary treatment programs. We are unique because we believe that addiction is a disease that needs to be managed throughout ones life. Thus, we provide ongoing treatment to people with medication, such as Suboxone and Buprenorphine, counseling, and SMART group. Regardless of insurance, we treat everyone. This disease does not discriminate. As our patients will tell people, we treat everyone that walks in the door with the highest level of respect and work with each individual to find the best treatment possible. We have our PACT promise for our patients:Programs that work, Access to great doctors and treatment, Comfortable and Convenient Clinic locations, and Treatment programs designed for them. Since opening, we have treated almost 700 people with this disease, and about 80% of the patients come back to us each month to continue their treatment. This is unprecedented in the field of recovery and we are very proud of it.
But, we take very little credit for this, as it is our patients that do all the heavy lifting in regaining their life. We have a phrase that we say in our clinic which is “Never Going Back”. We try to help all our patients achieve this goal every day.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck is a big part of life. But, I truly believe that everything happens for a reason. In my last job at a company called G4S, I was fired. I had never been fired before, but I would never be here if I had not had that bit of bad luck. Meeting my wife in High School and then meeting her again at my 5 year high school reunion is the best luck I ever had in my life. I feel you have to always keep positive and good things will happen. It does not mean that bad things won’t happen, but by knowing that you will be OK and that things will get better, you can keep going.
