Today we’d like to introduce you to Petra Reini.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I remember my first encounter with a camera. I was 10 years old and my parents had just purchased a small point and shoot camera to document the arrival of a new sister. I picked it up, messed with the basic (auto) settings a little, snapped a few pictures, and never dreamed I would have ended up here. I have always felt very artistic, but I’ve never been very good at expressing myself through the traditional art forms. I knew I loved to write and now I could take pictures, too. The next step in my photography journey happened during my freshman and sophomore years of high school. My parents saw my growing interest for photography and signed me up for a photography club offered at my school. The teacher of that club lovingly encouraged me and really helped me to grow not only as a photographer, but also as a person. Early this year, I took another photography class with my university and this gave me a broader look at the history of photography, making me love it even more. I decided to make the leap of faith and dive head first into running my own business. I second shot a wedding in the springtime and decided that capturing moments, memories, and love stories is what I’m meant to be doing. And I haven’t looked back since!
Please tell us about your art.
I am of the firm mindset that everyone has a unique and beautiful story and that every story should be told in a unique and beautiful way. For the people I photograph, I hope to give them the gift of confidence – before, during, and after our session. As a photographer, I am honored to capture some of the most exciting moments of life and I never want to lose sight of the end goal of being a blessing to everyone I encounter.
Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
Being a creative, in this market especially, comes at a high price. One consistent thing that I have experienced as a young photographer is people not valuing my work. When people ask me if I’m willing to cut my prices in half for them, or why I’m charging money for something like this, it’s so hard not to cave just to pay my bills. The bottom line is, your work is art and if people aren’t willing to pay for it, it’s not your problem. Know your worth and hold YOURSELF to that standard, as well as you clients.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My work can be seen on my website (petragracephotography.com), my Instagram (Instagram.com/petragracephotography), and also my Facebook (facebook.com/petragracephotos). The most supportive thing someone could do for my work is word of mouth recommendations.
