Meet Peter Sullivan and Meg Love of BoHo Theatre in Roger’s Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Peter Sullivan and Meg Love.

Peter and Meg, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
BoHo Theatre began in the Fall of 2003 with four people sitting around a living room talking about what makes a good theatre company.

Organization, a solid business approach, respect for the actor and the creative process, coupled with an adherence to a spirited mission statement was (and still is) the basis for what the founders of BoHo Theatre created. A not-for-profit, 501 (c) 3 corporation was officially formed on November 4, 2003. After a year of business planning and fundraising, BoHo produced Art by Yasmina Reza on the Bailiwick Studio stage. Since then, BoHo has produced musicals, classic works, original adaptations, and contemporary pieces. Our works have been well-received by both critics and audiences alike.

BoHo intends to keep growing with each production, and will continue to follow the initial guiding Principles established in that first year of organization.

BoHo Theatre’s mission is to create bold theatre that challenges convention through innovative storytelling and unites artist and audience in the examination of truth, beauty, freedom and love through the lens of human relationships.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Surviving as a storefront theatre in Chicago is never a smooth road. With growing competition in the Chicagoland area and generally the same number of audience members, it’s always a challenge to attract and keep an audience base.

Our greatest challenge right now is our rapid growth. Over the past few years, we’ve grown our company and board membership significantly, and our fundraising has taken a huge step forward.

With that growth, though, comes more everyday work. Considering we are an all volunteer organization, keeping the workload manageable and rewarding for our members is a constant struggle. Luckily, we are a theatrical family that values the process of creating art about all else, so when push comes to shove, we are able to support one another to make each show special.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with BoHo Theatre – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
BoHo is a non-profit theatre company in Chicago. Our mission is to create bold theatre that challenges convention through innovative storytelling and unite artist and audience in the examination of truth, beauty, freedom and love through the lens of human relationships. Our vision is to create a shared community of artists and patrons in which all members are moved through art to make thoughtful, well-examined, caring relationships the highest priority in their lives.

We specialize in the incorporation of the arts as a whole, including dance, music, visual art, graphic design, and other artistic disciplines. While we are best known for our musicals, we are passionate about telling all stories about relationships. As a company, we are most proud of our ability to secure, maintain and nurture the artist’s process, while inviting our patrons to join us on our journey. We have a deep focus on introspection and we hope that by seeing a BoHo production, you will be inclined to examine your own relationships and how you can make a more meaningful connection to others and the world.

I think our passion for the process is unique, both for our artists and our patrons. I also think that our viewpoint allows us to take a variety of stories and strip them down to their core and by really focusing in on the characters, we can bring a more intimate, powerful experience to our audience.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
We’re about to release our 2018 season, which will be our biggest season to date. As we continue to grow, we are working to expand our resources and connections within the Chicago theatrical community. Though we have our own space in Roger’s Park, we continue to produce larger shows at Stage 773 and Theatre Wit. Our long term goal, and what we are currently working towards, is finding a new space that can accommodate larger productions – one that we can call our own.
