Meet Peter Patterson of Peter Patterson Glassworks in Mundelein

Today we’d like to introduce you to Peter Patterson.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have a full Service glass blowing studio. I create my own work, I teach individuals and group classes on all levels, I also have a full line of Memorial Keepsakes. That’s where we take the cremain ashes and put them into beautiful glass art keepsakes. I also have a web site that people can purchase items from.

I have also created “Glo-Glass”…where I can put a formula of different earth elements into the hot glass while creating them and after they are finished…they will Glo-in-the-Dark. I put this into many of my pieces and it’s been very popular. I have a line of “Lightbulbs” in different sizes that all GLOW….really great pieces.

I have also created a new line of large pieces that light up with LED’s. They look like Fireworks Bursts and they are all different colored glass pieces put together and then lit up….really fantastic.

I also sell my work on the web site. Classes are also available thru Groupon, Living Social, and local community college (CLC), continuing education VH, and thru the studio.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Getting out of school and then the world went electronic (everything was computer driven) and they did not teach us that in school. Thankfully I have an admin who is very good with all the computer work. Throughout the years with the economy going up/down, it’s been a struggle at times keeping the studio open and functioning.

The last few years have been better since I have been focusing on teaching more and doing studio events.

Please tell us about Peter Patterson Glassworks.

I am very proud of the fact that I know a lot of glassblowing techniques and processes. Some of these processes I have personalized to make a style that is recognized as my own. (Glo-glass).

People come here and have a good time and leave with a smile on their face.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have started teaching and doing events earlier in my career. I would have other people helping me achieve my goals in my business. (Needed more assistance).
